The black phoebe (Sayornis nigricans) is a passerine bird of the tyrant-flycatcher familie. They have primarily black plumage with a white underbelly and undertail coverts. Males and females are identical in color, and juveniles have brown feather tips and brown wing bars. It lives in a variety of habitats but is always near water. Their breeding range is from southern Oregon and California down trough Central and South America. It is mainly insectivorous and waits on a branch before going forth and catching it's prey on the wing. They make open cup nests placed under cliffs or bridges, which they cement in place with mud This one was fotographed at the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert, AZ.
