Starting with a standard 1200 sedan, its creator meticulously reshaped the body, removing the B-pillar entirely to create the stunning, pillarless hardtop silhouette seen in the photo. It was a delicate dance of metalwork and structural reinforcement, all aimed at a single aesthetic goal. But the real magic lay hidden beneath the hood. The original 1.2-litre engine, reliable but uninspired, was meticulously taken apart. The builder, with a twinkle in his eye and grease under his fingernails, gave it a specialised intake manifold designed to feed a pair of Weber carburettors. This configuration required extensive porting and polishing of the cylinder head to maximise flow, unlocking an aggressive character from the small block. This 1200 was also given high-compression pistons and a Nitrided crankshaft, making the lightweight coupé a genuine road rocket. With these modifications, the sound from the custom exhaust was unlike any other Lada, a deeper, more urgent rumble. To harness this new character, the entire drivetrain was overhauled. A custom, close-ratio four-speed gearbox was fabricated using parts from various Soviet trucks and prototypes, allowing for blistering acceleration. The suspension was lowered and stiffened, with double-wishbone architecture at the front (a custom modification, as stock 2101s were simpler) and a more robust live axle at the rear, all supported by Gotti-style multi-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in wide, radial tyres. The 'Phantom of Tolyatti' was never meant to be mass-produced. It was a one-off, a technical exercise, a whisper among car enthusiasts. Stories told of it beating much faster, more modern cars in secretive drag races, its twin-carbs howling like a banshee through the silent streets. Today, the car stands as a myth.
