Botanical Blueprints

To create cyanotypes, I begin by collecting local plants looking for interesting shapes and details in nature. Flora is arranged on chemically prepared watercolor paper that I prepare and place in sunlight. The process allows for an element of surprise as the images take shape and indigo blue color blooms. Cyanotype is a photographic process discovered in 1842. The process became popular to reproduce blueprints used in architectural drawings.
