This book cover patterning technique was developed in the 1770s by using an acidic compound to create a natural looking tree bark/branch pattern in calf-leather used for book binding. The name for the pattern is "tree calf leather". The original design was scanned at high resolution and contrast was digitally enhanced; small scratches were digitally repaired. This design might not be appropriate for vegans. However, the calf in question died circa 1878, well over a century ago, and now has achieved some memorial respect via digital representation.
