Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was an English novelist and poet, best known for her first published novel 'Jane Eyre' (1847) which was critically acclaimed and an immediate success. The novel gave new truthfulness to Victorian fiction. She later wrote 'Shirley' (1849) and 'Villette' (1853).
